Silas Butler – painted a year or two before his death.\u00a0 In family hands today.<\/p><\/div>\n

Silas was born on 14 Sept. 1778 in Wethersfield, Hartford County, CT, to Joseph and Abigail (Boardman) Butler; 5th child of 7. The family owned a farm about half a mile up the “Hartford Road” from the Wethersfield Meeting House, but for reasons not yet ascertained, they left it for Pittsfield, Berkshire County, MA around the end\u00a0 of 1792. The farm was sold the following year, handled by eldest son Levi, who lived and operated a store on Broad St along the green in Wethersfield.<\/p>\n

Silas remained behind in Wethersfield with said eldest brother Levi, apprenticed to grow up learning the business of a merchant. When the new United States Navy was created in 1794, it promised some new possibilities and adventures, but it took problems with the Revolutionary Government in France to launch the new navy into actual use in 1797. Silas applied for a position in the new US Navy; he was appointed purser<\/a> or “paymaster” to the USS CONNECTICUT on July 3, 1799, handling not only the monies of the vessel but in charge of the monthly pay to the officers and crew, overseeing the ship’s provisions<\/a>, handling and distributing the “slops<\/a>“.\u00a0 He served aboard four vessels – The US sloop of war CONNECTICUT, the US schooner ENTERPRISE<\/a>, the US frigate CHESAPEAKE<\/a>, and the US frigate CONSTELLATION<\/a> – until he retired from the Navy in November of 1805, going into private business, first in Washington D.C. but then removing to Manhattan to marry Phebe Waldron and then setting up business in Brooklyn, NY.\u00a0 They had eight children, one of whom is thought to have been an adopted niece.<\/p>\n

In 1817 he decided to return to the Navy, regaining appointment as a purser and became the purser to the new Brooklyn Navy Yard<\/a>, NY.\u00a0 He remained in that position until his death on 9 April 1837<\/a>.<\/p>\n

His descendants have kept artifacts from Silas, handed down through the generations, and by these, I have learned a great deal about the man.\u00a0 I look forward to when I can focus on him and get his biography completed.\u00a0 Below is a link to the PDF of\u00a0a lovely article written by Donald Hoffmann, CAPT, SC, USN (Ret.) regarding pursers in the early Navy and Silas’s part, page 24.<\/p>\n
