{"id":324,"date":"2016-09-22T15:55:23","date_gmt":"2016-09-22T15:55:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ussconnecticut1799.com\/?page_id=324"},"modified":"2018-01-05T00:37:06","modified_gmt":"2018-01-05T00:37:06","slug":"george-tryon","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/ussconnecticut1799.com\/?page_id=324","title":{"rendered":"George Tryon"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>George was the eldest son of <a href=\"https:\/\/ussconnecticut1799.com\/?page_id=2\">Moses Tryon<\/a> and 2d wife Eunice Treat. \u00a0Born in Wethersfield, Connecticut on 6 April 1783, he seems to have decided to follow in dad&#8217;s footsteps&#8230; At age 16 he joined the crew of the US sloop of war Connecticut as a midshipman under his father&#8217;s command. \u00a0George left the Navy with the downsizing of the Peace Establishment Act of March 1801, but signed with a merchant brig\u00a0<em>Ontario<\/em>, Captain (and deacon) Timothy Stillman of Wethersfield,\u00a0bound to\u00a0 Fort Royal, Martinique in 1802.\u00a0 Evidence suggests that George had signed as the ship&#8217;s mate.\u00a0 While at Fort Royal, the mate of the Ontario and three seamen died while at Fort Royal and two more seamen along the passage to NY, all between the 20th and 29th of September, 1802; likely yellow fever.\u00a0 Capt.
