{"id":232,"date":"2015-06-05T11:21:15","date_gmt":"2015-06-05T11:21:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ussconnecticut1799.com\/?page_id=232"},"modified":"2021-02-21T16:44:41","modified_gmt":"2021-02-21T16:44:41","slug":"philip-gildersleeve","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/ussconnecticut1799.com\/?page_id=232","title":{"rendered":"Philip Gildersleeve"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Philip was a veteran of the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Battle_of_Long_Island\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Battle of Brooklyn Heights<\/a> in which the Americans were routed.\u00a0 He then, along with his parents Obadiah and Mary, and siblings, fled Long Island via Sag Harbour for Saybrook, CT on 30 Aug. 1776 along with the mass exodus of <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/details\/refugeesof1776fr00mathuoft\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Long Island Refugees.<\/a> The Gildersleeves arrived first at Saybrook, Connecticut but then traveled up the Connecticut River on a boat owned by a Capt.
